Personal Experience

Please meet Attorney of the Week, Avril Ussery Sisk NACD.DC, an independent director and Chair of the NACD (National Association of Corporate Directors) (NACD Capital Area) Chapter Advisory Board.

Recently, she served on the board of a privately held information technology company where she supported strategic public-private partnerships and the government relations strategy to drive significant revenue and ultimately, an important transaction.

A former judge and attorney with over 30 years of professional and community leadership experience, as well as consulting experience in Japan, Avril has established a strong record of innovation in large and mid-sized government, business, and nonprofit organizations.

Now, she has embraced her portfolio career, eager to explore new opportunities and expand her business impact. During her tenure as Chair of the ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION of Arlington (VA), the National Landing area of Arlington County became the first “smart city” in the United States to establish the new 5G digital infrastructure. Avril regularly speaks and writes about the expansive subject of AI governance. She continues to explore the implications of AI regulations on business, particularly regarding directors’ oversight and strategic responsibilities. As a member of the Athena Alliance Advisory Board, she is a contributor to the “AI Governance Playbook” from Athena Alliance.

Moreover, Avril is known to provide substantial mentorship to many deserving individuals who are a part of the various organizations and communities she serves. Personally, I have such deep respect for Avril as she is a true, selfless leader who has contributed to the individual and collective successes of many.
